VBS and COVID-19

The past few years have caused much transition and adjusting to new ways of life. Although everything around us is changing, God remains the same. This year, we are welcoming back all attendants and participants to enjoy our most favorite event of the year! Our main priority is, and always was, keeping everyone safe while enjoying a full week of learning about Jesus Christ. We are constantly checking recommendations provided by CDC and our state and local government as new information arises. To protect everyone involved with VBS 2021, we have implemented the following:

  • All volunteers are encouraged to a facemask or face shield, but it is not required (updated June 15, 2021).
  • Children will be highly encouraged to wear a facemask or face shield, but it is not required (updated June 15, 2021).
  • Handwashing or the use of hand sanitizer will be encouraged at the end of each station.
  • We created a “Clean Team” to disinfect high-contact areas before, during, and after each day.
  • 3-feet physical distancing will be encouraged (similar to public schools).
  • Incorporated modified activities.
  • All indoor locations will maximize on room ventilation.
  • Before checking in daily, registrants and volunteers will need to complete a daily symptom checker.
  • All food and drink items will be prepackaged or individually prepared.
  • COVID-19 training for all volunteers.
  • Created an alternative plan and communication process if a positive COVID-19 result is confirmed.

About the Director

Adrian felt a calling from the Lord to serve as the Director of Vacation Bible School in 2017 (with his first VBS being Superhero). Adrian was born and raised in Whittier and has over ten years of experience working with children of different ages, identities, and socio-economic statuses. Adrian has his B.A degree and is currently in school for a Single-Subject Teaching Credential and Master of Education at Biola University. While in his undergrad, Adrian worked as Assistant Director of Jr. Programming at a childcare facility in Orange County where he worked with children 6 weeks-12 years old and managed a team that provides the best childcare in the area. Now, Adrian works amongst the private and public school districts at the elementary and middle-school levels. Adrian is LiveScan background checked, in the Trustline Registry, is CPR/AED/First Aid certified for infants/children/adults, and has completed sensitivity training for youth. Above all, Adrian loves to use his creativity, leadership, and child-at-heart personality to show the children in our community the love of Christ and fun!

Frequently Asked Questions:

What ages can enroll in VBS?

You may register your child age 4 years (potty-trained) through 8th grade. Starting from 9th grade, your child may volunteer as an assistant group leader or in an activity area. Please see Volunteer registration to sign up.

Can I sign up my neighbors/another relative since I will be taking them/dropping them off?

You may register the child, however, the parent/guardian must be listed and stated as the primary contact person. In the “Other information” section of the sign up sheet, you may state who will be picking up and dropping off.

Can I stay with my child during the whole duration of VBS?

Due to the safety of the children, we do not allow parents/guardians to stay with the child after drop off in the sanctuary in the morning. However, if the child needs special assistance, please contact the VBS Director and accommodations will be made. If your child is in the PreK group, you may stay for a limited amount of time, please contact the VBS Director for more information.

My child has certain allergies and/or special needs, can they still come?

Of course! Children of all levels, abilities, and walks of life are welcome to our VBS (Matthew 19:14)! For allergies and special accommodations, a color-coded sticker will be placed on the back of the child’s name-tag so our volunteers and leadership team are aware at all times.

How much is the registration fee per child?

VBS is free for all attendees, there is no cost to attend! If you would like to make a monetary donation toward our VBS, please click here and under the “Fund” tab, select “Vacation Bible School”.

What should my child wear?

You should dress your child in appropriate “outdoor” clothing (i.e bottoms, top, closed toed shoes, hat) as the children will be rotating to various activity stations throughout the day. We also have “silly days” which children can dress up according to the silly day of the week if they wish.

How can I register my child for VBS?

Registration can be done online by clicking here, or you may sign up in person at First Love Calvary Chapel Whittier. Registration will open in June 2021.

How do I check my child in to VBS?

On the first day of VBS, the doors will open at 8:30am for non-preregistered children and at 8:45am Tuesday-Friday for everyone. You will need to take your child to the grade group check-in table that corresponds to the grade they will be entering in the upcoming school year. Our registration team will help get the child checked in and you may walk them in the sanctuary to their group and group leader(s).

How do I check out my child from VBS?

Each Vacation Bible School day ends at 1pm, however you may pick up your child at anytime you wish. You may go to any “check-in” tables and you must have an identification document (ID, DL, or an official document that states your first and last name as stated on the registration). You may pick up all children you are authorized to (as stated on the registration form) and you will be directed to the multi-purpose room as a volunteer retrieves the child(ren).
